Karen Mitchell

Duties

As Chief Nursing Officer, Mitchell is responsible for Nursing, Respiratory Therapy. Responsibilities include overseeing the inpatient units and the Emergency Department. Additional areas of responsibility include hematology and oncology, critical care transport team, trauma, nursing informatics, and clinical practice and education.

Background 

  • Most recently was director of the hematology/oncology service line at CHKD.  Prior to that, served as hospital research coordination administrator and clinical research coordinator
  • Previous work includes clinical and leadership roles at the Medical University of South Carolina (PICU) and Texas Children’s Hospital (PICU and Pediatric Cardiology)
  • Instructor in Pediatrics at Eastern Virginia Medical School; served as chair of the Institutional Review Board

Education

Mitchell receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received a masters degree in Nursing Leadership and Management from George Washington University. She also completed course work in Bioethics and Georgetown University and LEAN for Healthcare training at the University of Tennessee.
