NORFOLK, Va. – Dr. Michael J. Goretsky, a CHKD pediatric surgeon, is one of 91 honorees from seven countries selected as a “master surgeon educator” for his work instructing residents and surgeons.

He was inducted as an associate member of the first American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators in October.

The Academy recognizes surgeon educators who have advanced the science and practice of education by mentoring others, translating innovation into action, and fostering the exchange of creative ideas.

Dr. Goretsky is a pediatric general and thoracic surgeon who has extensive experience in the repair of chest wall disease and in surgical quality.

He’s been involved in clinical treatment, research, and education of the Nuss procedure, which was developed at CHKD for repair of pectus excavatum. He also has researched other minimally invasive techniques, along with methods of improving surgery. He is surgeon champion for the Pediatric National Surgical Quality Improvement Program at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters.

Dr. Goretsky has also been involved in resident and medical student education at Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as an admissions interviewer for the medical school. He lectures extensively in the U.S. and internationally on chest wall disease.
