Get the most from a visit with your child’s pediatrician with these tips:

• Before your visit, think of questions or concerns you may have about your child. Prepare your questions in advance so you don’t forget, and speak up during your visit. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your child’s health.
• Consider bringing a notebook or jotting down notes from your visit in your phone. Keep notes about any new concerns, medications, treatments, or tests that were mentioned during your appointment. Also note any new instructions from your doctor.
• If your child is given a new medication, don’t leave without understanding the proper dosage and timing, any possible side effects, what the medication is for, and how it will help your child. Also consider asking about other ways your child’s condition can be treated.
• If your pediatrician orders any tests or procedures, be sure you understand why the test or procedure is needed and what the results could mean for your child.
• Make sure to schedule any needed follow-up visits, and your child’s next well check, before you leave the office. Write down the date, time, and purpose of any future visits.
• Be sure you know how to contact your child’s doctor after hours. This is especially important if your child becomes sick, or if you have questions and need advice when the office if closed.
