At CHKD, each new employee is required to attend CHKD Health System Hospital Orientation, which occurs on the second Monday of each month.
Some are required to attend orientations extending up to four days depending on their role in the health system.
Day
One: CHKD Health System Hospital Orientation
Also referred to as Orientation A, CHKD Health System Hospital Orientation takes place on the second
Monday of each month. This program focuses on the CHKD Health System.
- CHKDHS Hospital Orientation begins promptly at 7:30 a.m.
in the Brickhouse Auditorium's lobby and ends at approximately 4:30
p.m. Plan enough time to find parking. CHKD Human Resource personnel
will greet you in the CHKD lobby and direct you to the Brickhouse lobby.
- Dress appropriately. Professional business
attire/medical scrubs is required during orientation. The CHKDHS dress
code will be discussed during the orientation program.
Day
Two: Orientation B
Day Two covers topics specific to the health system division in which
you have been hired. It is designed for all employees who will have any
direct contact with patients as part of their job responsibilities. Content includes
topics related to emergency medical response, age-specific care, infection
control concepts, bioethical issues, and CHKD's culture of safety. Orientation B
concludes on Tuesday afternoon.
Days
Three and Four: Orientation C
Days Three and Four are designed for all employees with direct
patient care responsibilities in a variety of clinical roles and settings
within the hospital. It includes both Orientation A and B. A
variety of other topics relevant to pediatric clinical care are covered in these two additional days.

On-going orientation information will be provided to you during the first week
of orientation.

Lunch will be provided to Patient
Care Services Orientation C participants on Thursday. If you have any special
needs or dietary restrictions, please contact the Nursing Practice and
Education Department prior to your start date at (757) 668-7056.
Parking
New hires attending the New Hire
Orientation Program on their first day of employment are requested to park in
the Visitor’s Garage on the CHKD/EVMS/Sentara Campus. Failure to present a
validated ticket when exiting the garage could result in a financial charge.

instructions in their orientation schedule packet distributed at the first-day
session.

Identification Badge
During new hire orientation, you
will receive your CHKDHS badge. To ensure the safety and security of
staff and patients, you are required to wear this security badge at all times.
Pediatric
Medication Administration Online Test Instructions
Prior to orientation, RNs and EMT Paramedics
are required to complete the Pediatric Medication Administration Online Test
(PMAT).
Deadline for submission is exactly
one week prior to your start date.
