Urgent Care Transfers to an Academic Pediatric Emergency Department
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. Joel ClingenpeelandDr. Margaret Eason
A large proportion of patients transferred from urgent care centers were directly discharged from the ED without any ED resource utilization. Eliminating or reducing such transfers has the potential to limit the amount of non-urgent ED visits, thus producing cost savings and better patient care.

A prenatal diagnosis of mosaic trisomy 5 reveals a postnatal complete uniparental disomy of chromosome 5 with multiple congenital anomalies
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. Samantha Vergano
Mosaic trisomy 5 is a very rare condition in liveborns, with few cases reported in the last four decades. There are some reports of prenatally diagnosed mosaic trisomy 5 resulting in phenotypically normal offspring, suggesting a low level of mosaicism, but there are also reports associated with multiple congenital anomalies, cardiovascular malformations, and intrauterine growth restriction.

Birthweight and serum uric acid in American adolescents
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. J. Bryan Carmody
We evaluated the relationship between birthweight and uric acid in a nationally representative sample of 5390 US adolescents aged 12-15 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 1999 to 2012. There was an inverse association between birthweight and uric acid after adjustment for sex, age, race, obesity, and dietary sodium intake.

Empiric Antibiotic Use ans Susceptibility in Infants with Bacterial Infections: A multicenter Retrospective Cohort Study
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. Rianna Leazer
Empirical antibiotic use differed across regionally diverse US children's hospitals in infants <90 days old with UTI, bacteremia, or meningitis. Antimicrobial susceptibility to common antibiotic regimens was similar across hospitals, and adding ampicillin to a third-generation cephalosporin minimally improves coverage. Our findings support incorporating empirical antibiotic recommendations into national guidelines for infants with suspected bacterial infection.

A Prospective, Holistic, Multicenter Approach to Tracking and Understanding Bloodstream Infections in Pediatric Hematology-Oncology Patients
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. Eric Werner
Tracking all BSIs, not just CLABSIs in PHO patients, is a patient-centered, clinically relevant approach that could help better assess across-center and within-center differences in infection rates, including CLABSI. This approach enables informed decision making by
healthcare providers, payors, and the public.

Epidemiology of Cerebrospinal Fluid Cultures and Time to Detection in Term Infants
CHKD-affiliated authors: Dr. Rianna Leazer and James Paulson
The majority of pathogenic bacteria in CSF exhibit growth within 36 hours. Most growth from CSF cultures in febrile infants is treated as contamination. The epidemiology of meningitis has remained constant, with group B Streptococcus as the predominant pathogen, despite changes noted in the epidemiology of bacteremia in this population.

Among many parents and coaches, it is believed that early single sport specialization is essential for future competitive sport success and, further, that a high level of achievement in youth sports predicts future success. Owing to these misconceptions, youth sport has become focused on results at young ages rather than the overall development process, including physical and psychosocial health and well-being.
