Pediatric Anesthesiology

Infants, children and teens react in unique ways to anesthesia. Our pediatric anesthesiologists are specially trained to manage the safety and comfort of children having surgery or other procedures that may cause pain or anxiety. 

What We Do

Our anesthesiology team works with kids all day, every day, at CHKD and its health and surgery centers in Virginia Beach and Newport News.

During surgery, we keep a close eye on children's breathing, heart rate, blood pressure and other vital signs. We also help with pain after surgery and are part of the general pain management team at CHKD. We ease children's anxiety about surgery through age-appropriate communication and extra touches, like allowing them to pick a favorite flavor of anesthesia. Strawberry and bubble gum are very popular.

In addition, our anesthesiologists are involved in many diagnostic and therapeutic procedures and perform preoperative screening and assessments.
