These patients usually do not have pain. They may likely experience issues with poor balance and coordination if they move around.

Evaluation

Your specialist may order a variety of studies to evaluate your child’s spine. These tests may include X-rays, MRI or CT scans. Your specialist may also send you to the laboratory to have your child’s level of Vitamin D checked.

Once your child’s tests are complete, your specialist will review the plan of care for your child. Additionally your child may require a multidisciplinary team that may include pulmonary, cardiac, and general surgery to prepare a treatment plan.

Treatment

Bracing can be an option for smaller curves. For non-ambulatory patients, wheelchair modifications can be beneficial for posturing support.

Some patients can benefit from physical therapy. Some patients will require surgical intervention to correct their scoliosis with a posterior spinal fusion.

The goals for these patients are to prevent further progression of their curve, reduce pain, and improve sitting balance.

If your specialist has recommended your child will need to have a surgery you will need to schedule your child for the pre-operative spinal fusion class.

We understand that preparing for surgery can be hard. At CHKD, our spine program coordinator is a registered nurse and will guide you throughout the process.
