It is CHKD's responsibility to compile, protect, store and retrieve medical records of patients in a manner that protects patient confidentiality.

Medical records will not be removed from hospital premises unless under subpoena or court order and then only under the direction of the director of health information management or general counsel.

The only exceptions are when patient records are sent to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for testing and procedures of a CHKD patient, in which the records return with the patient, or in medical examiner's cases.

CHKD operates and complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act Privacy Rule, which sets national standards for the security of electronic protected health information.
