Junior Volunteer Opportunities

Each year, teenagers who turn 15 before June 1 and are still in high school can apply to participate in our Summer Junior Volunteer Program. Returning junior volunteers receive their application information in February, and forms for new applicants are available annually on March 1st.

The program is divided into multiple sessions, each lasting 2-3 weeks. Volunteers should request a session that does not conflict with other summer plans such as camps and vacations. Volunteers report to their volunteer assignment on weekdays, Monday - Thursday only (during each summer) and can choose a morning shift (9 a.m. – 12 p.m.), afternoon shift (1 – 4 p.m.) or full day of volunteering. Please note: While we are able to offer some roles with patient contact, the majority of our volunteer opportunities are strictly office-based.

Assignments are available at our main hospital campus in downtown Norfolk, as well as many satellite centers including Virginia Beach, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Suffolk. The program fills on a first come, first served basis and service areas include:

  • Patient Interactions (in playroom and at bedside)
  • Staff support in various clinics and offices
  • Gift Shop
  • Surgical Services

Junior volunteers are given the opportunity to participate in an annual career fair featuring hospital employees from a variety of departments.

Sessions

  • Session 1: June 17 – July 3
  • Session 2: July 8 – July 25
  • Session 3: July 29 – August 8
