CHKD Goes Green for Mental Health Awareness Month

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – CHKD will be kicking off Mental Health Awareness Month by lighting its buildings green in May, and hosting a month of events to promote the mental health of children.

One of the highlights will be a screening of “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety,” an inspirational documentary that features children and young adults speaking about anxiety. CHKD is presenting the screening in partnership with the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation, a Richmond-based nonprofit dedicated to erasing stigmas, raising awareness, and providing mental health education. Cameron Gallagher, who struggled with these issues, lost her life due to an undiagnosed heart condition just after she crossed the finish line of the 2014 Shamrock Half Marathon.

A panel discussion with CHKD experts and special guests will follow the screening. Media representatives are invited to interview these experts on anxiety to advance the event.

The IndieFlix film about anxiety – the most common mental condition in the country – features an interview with Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. He shares his story of being bullied and depressed, which led to severe anxiety. The winner of 28 Olympic medals encourages others with anxiety to talk about it and reach out for help.

A popular and well-received documentary, the Angst screening and discussion will be May 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., in the Sparks Science Center at Cape Henry Collegiate, 1320 Mill Dam Road in Virginia Beach. The event, suitable for children 10 and older, is free, but space is limited. Visit CHKD.org/Angst to register. Representatives from the CKG Foundation will also attend.

  • CHKD also will be lighting buildings green the month of May, in partnership with other organizations across the country, including the National Alliance on Mental Illness Coastal Virginia, which will host a lighting ceremony on May 1, at 11:30 a.m., at Town Center Square fountain in Virginia Beach. Besides the main hospital, CHKD will light CHKD Health Centers and Urgent Cares at these locations: 1924 Landstown Centre Way, Virginia Beach; 817 Volvo Parkway, Chesapeake; 3960 Virginia Beach Boulevard, Virginia Beach; 680 Oyster Point Road, Newport News.
  • This year’s CHKD RunWalk for The Kids on May 11 will be dedicated to mental health, with proceeds benefiting CHKD’s mental health program. The 14th annual RunWalk will be at the Waterside District in Norfolk and will include an 8K run, a 2-mile walk, and a 1-mile FunRun for kids. To register, visit RunWalkForTheKids.org.
  • For a full schedule of events, visit CHKD’s Mental Health Month Calendar of Events.

Huggies Grant Supports Hugs from Volunteer Cuddlers at CHKD

NORFOLK, Va. – Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters has received a $10,000 grant from Huggies “No Baby Unhugged” program to support its volunteer cuddler program.

The grant was one of eight given to hospitals throughout the country this year to start or support ongoing programs that increase human touch of newborns in neonatal intensive care units. At CHKD, the grant will be used to buy recliner chairs and footstools and to pay for expenses such as volunteer immunizations, uniforms, and background checks.

CHKD opened its NICU in 1972. Today, it’s the most advanced in the region, admitting about 550 babies a year. The volunteer cuddler program began in 2003 with nine cuddlers, a number that’s since grown to 39. Last year, they logged 1,600 hours of hugs. Cuddlers must first have 60 hours of volunteering in other parts of the hospital before taking on this important position. For more information about volunteering at CHKD, visit www.chkd.org/volunteer.

Dale Pearson, CHKD’s longest running volunteer cuddler, has been comforting NICU babies for the past 15 years. She’s a polio survivor who spent time in the hospital as a child growing up in Maine, and remembers seeing others in “iron lung machines” in wards far different from the cheerful units at CHKD. The Portsmouth resident comes to CHKD every week to bring comfort and cheer to hospitalized children.

“Hugs are critical to our babies here at CHKD,” said Laura Biava, director of patient care services at the NICU. “Not only do cuddlers provide touch to help babies develop and grow, but they also reduce the burden and stress for families and staff who can’t always be there to cuddle their babies.”

CHKD Surgery Program Earns Prestigious Level I Certification From the American College of Surgeons

NORFOLK, Va. – Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters has received the American College of Surgeons’ highest level of certification for pediatric hospital surgical programs, one of just 15 centers nationwide to have earned this designation.

Dr. Robert Kelly, chief of surgery at CHKD, today announced the hospital’s surgical program, which includes the main hospital in Norfolk and surgery centers at Concert Drive in Virginia Beach and Oyster Point in Newport News, has been verified as a prestigious Level I center. The centers must meet rigorous criteria for staffing, training, facility features, and protocols for care in a program that aims to raise the level of children’s surgical care across the country.

The initiative began certifying centers in 2015 that could show continuous efforts to improve surgical quality, prevent complications, reduce costs, and save lives. The verification requires a site visit by a panel that includes an experienced pediatric surgeon, anesthesiologist, and nurse, which reviews the program for a multidisciplinary approach and a unique focus on each patient.

The center must also participate in a national data registry to track and compare its processes and outcomes and devise ways to improve them. The Level I centers must offer multiple medical and surgical specialties with procedures for major congenital anomalies and complex diseases.

“This has been a team effort, and we’re extremely proud to have achieved this distinction,” said Dr. Kelly. “It’s a reflection of the full commitment of every partner on the team, and a testament to the high level of care we provide to children throughout the region.”

The American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons that was founded in 1913 to raise the standards of surgical education and practice and to improve the quality of care for surgical patients. Its achievements have placed it at the forefront of American surgery and have made the College an important advocate for all surgical patients. The College has more than 80,000 members and is the largest organization of surgeons in the world.
