Surgeons from more than 30 countries who specialize in chest wall surgeries will attend
NORFOLK, Va. –– Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters will host Chest Wall International Group’s (CWIG) 17th annual meeting June 15 to 17 in Norfolk, Virginia. The meeting will mark the first time this prestigious group has convened in the U.S. More than 150 top surgeons from the United States, South America, Europe and Asia will attend.
The conference will focus on recent developments in the surgical and non-surgical treatment and understanding of the chest wall abnormalities pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum as well as chest wall problems caused by trauma and disease.
Over the past three decades, Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD) has grown into an international center for chest wall deformity treatment and research. The minimally invasive Nuss Procedure was developed at the hospital by its surgeon-in-chief emeritus, Dr. Donald Nuss.
The Nuss innovation marked a turning point in the field of chest wall surgery. Prior to its development, many people who suffered from pectus excavatum chose to live with the condition rather than undergo the standard correction procedure that required a large incision and fracturing the sternum and several ribs.
The wide adoption of the Nuss Procedure has given CHKD surgeons the opportunity to gather and publish clinically significant outcomes and to facilitate multi-center research into the causes and effects of chest wall deformities. This had led to refinements of the Nuss Procedure and a new understanding of chest wall deformities as medical problems that can and should be treated.
The three-day international meeting will begin with a keynote address by Dr. Nuss, who will also be at the official opening of the hospital's new Nuss Center for Chest Wall Reconstruction. The new center will provide the latest treatment options and specialized pediatric care to children, teenagers and young adults with chest wall deformities.
