Our physicians and nurses work closely as a team to provide age-appropriate care to all. We are proud that a majority of our OR nurses are CNOR certified and we follow the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) and the Association of periOperative Nurses (AORN)
professional, evidenced-based practice models.
Preoperative preparation is essential in alleviating fears associated with the unknown element of surgery or teaching the child to express and manage fears. Our peri-anesthesia nurses and child life specialists support the operative team to help children manage their fears through non-pharmaceutical methods and most of
the children who come to surgery do not receive premedication.
Our waiting rooms areas are filled with video games and toys. The children enjoy play time prior to surgery as well as choose a mode of transportation for their trip to the operating room – in a wagon, on a bike or in the arms of our caring staff.
Pre-operative tours can be arranged to ease anxieties before surgery and kids get to participate in their care by selecting an anesthesia-flavored mask used for induction.
CHKD also has two ambulatory surgery centers. One center is in the Princess Anne area of Virginia Beach and the other is in the Oyster Point area on the Peninsula. They provide the same specialty care to pediatric patients and their families.
