Why Choose CHKD?

The benefits of working with CHKD's sports medicine program are many:

  • We specialize in kids and understand the unique needs of child and adolescent athletes and tailor rehabilitation to meet the needs of children.
  • Unlike traditional facilities, at CHKD your child will be in rehab only with other children. This makes rehab more fun and engaging.
  • In addition to helping your child recover, they will learn injury prevention and performance enhancement exercises.
  • Your child will receive an individualized evaluation and a custom program.
  • We have a team approach to physical therapy. We will consult with you, physicians, coaches and trainers in order keep your child safe, healthy and strong.

What to Expect

  • Each visit to take approximately 45 to 60 minutes and we ask that your child arrive wearing comfortable clothes.
  • If your child is under the age of 14, a parent or guardian must remain in the gym or waiting area during the entire session. For children over the age of 14, a parent must attend the initial visit and then you may sign a waiver allowing us to treat your child in your absence.
  • During the first visit, the physical therapist (PT) will perform a physical therapy evaluation. The evaluation consists of asking several specific questions about the condition and the symptoms. Your input is often very helpful during this time.
  • Afterwards, the PT will perform a thorough examination, often including areas other than injury site in an effort to determine other factors that may have contributed to the condition. Physical therapy treatment often includes a combination of exercises and may include the use of heat, ice or massage.
  • During the following visits, the PT will review the exercises and add additional exercises and treatments as necessary to advance your child's recovery.
  • It's important that you work with your child to ensure they are doing all the exercises that have been prescribed to be done at home.

Insurance

Physical therapy requires a physician referral. Please make sure you have the referral before you call to schedule an appointment and bring it with you to your appointment. If you do not have a referral, or if the referral you have is expired, your insurance may not pay for the services.
